Scientists first successful laser capture of 9 femtosecond molecular decomposition process

According to the AAAS website recently, an international research team composed of scientists from Kansas State University in the United States and scientists from Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) in Spain successfully captured the chemical reaction kinetics of molecules containing 4 atoms within 9 femtoseconds process. This latest study, published in Science, will provide scientists with a powerful tool to observe the different types of reaction processes and molecular changes in the fields of chemistry, biology and physics.

Femtosecond only a thousandth trillionth of a second, many chemical reactions occur in the femtosecond moment, before there is no way to measure the molecular changes in the femtosecond process. Laser recording of molecular changes in femtoseconds was first proposed by Katherine Lin, a physicist at Kansas State University, and his colleagues. In 2012, the first atomic-molecule decomposition of oxygen molecules was laser-photographed in 2012. Through a mid-infrared laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) technique, the international team used the internal electrons of molecules to take pictures of the molecules and obtained continuous shots of chemical bond breaking in acetylene. They apply a strong laser to the acetylene molecules, activating an electron in the molecule and initiating an acetylene molecule to undergo a decomposition reaction. Finally, several pictures are taken continuously for this molecular change that takes place in 9 femtoseconds. "This is the first real-time observation of the molecular breakdown of 9 femtoseconds."

The team also calculated the length of the new chemical bonds in the acetylene molecule through the obtained continuous photos. Lin Qidong explained that there are four atoms in the acetylene molecule, and the molecular structure contains multiple chemical bonds. With the help of the femtosecond laser tool, researchers can determine the position and sequence of the chemical bonds to better understand and control the chemical reaction process.
