The world's first million-volt reactor was introduced

On February 13th, the world's first 1000 kV, 240,000-kilowatt shunt reactor successfully passed all tests at Xidian Group’s Xichang Company. Its technical performance has reached an international leading level, marking a significant breakthrough in power transmission technology. This groundbreaking device, the highest voltage and largest capacity shunt reactor globally, represents a major milestone in the history of international power equipment manufacturing. This achievement highlights the West’s growing capabilities in advanced power systems. Earlier last year, during the bidding process for the 1000-kV UHV AC demonstration project spanning Southeast, Nanyang, and Jingmen, the West secured four 1000-kV, 320,000-kilowatt shunt reactors for the Southeast substation and seven 1000-kV, 240,000-kilowatt units for the Nanyang substation. These contracts marked a major step forward in the company’s expansion into high-voltage infrastructure. In 2024, the company further solidified its position by signing a supply agreement with the State Grid Corporation for four 1000-kV, 200,000-kilowatt shunt reactors and two 240,000-kilowatt units. This million-volt reactor was the first developed specifically for the UHV transmission demonstration project, which is the highest voltage level ever implemented worldwide. UHV technology is considered one of the most advanced in the global energy sector. Since the mid-1990s, the West has taken bold steps to independently develop key technologies for 1000-kV transformers and shunt reactors, earning several national patents in the process. To meet the demands of UHV development, Xichang invested heavily in plant upgrades, added advanced production equipment, and implemented efficient technological processes. The company has since successfully developed China’s first 1,000-kV ultra-high voltage transformer and also produced the 1,700-kV and 610,000-kV Ante high-voltage power transformers, which are among the most advanced in the world. These achievements have provided invaluable experience and expertise in the design and manufacturing of large-scale shunt reactors, reinforcing the company’s leadership in the field of high-voltage power systems.
