Excerpts from DailyHerald.com: The Carol Stream Fire Protection District board has taken a major step forward in its leadership transition, approving the promotion of Deputy Chief Bob Hoff to the role of Fire Chief. The decision was made during a meeting on Monday night, and the board is expected to formally sign Hoff’s contract at their next session on July 11. While the exact terms of the agreement are still being finalized, it's anticipated that Hoff will be under a three-year contract, with his salary still under discussion. Hoff will now lead a fire district that includes three stations and approximately 60 sworn personnel. He joined the department in 2012, just weeks after stepping down as the head of the second-largest fire department in the country. At the time, he had hoped to focus more on family life, but he accepted the position of deputy chief under his long-time friend and former chief, Rick Kolomay. "The pace here has always been high, and we're going to keep it that way," Hoff said shortly after the announcement. "The pride and professionalism this team shows—it's exactly what I experienced when I was in the city. I love the fire service; it's my whole life, aside from my family." His passion for firefighting runs deep—four generations of his family have served in the profession, including his son. One of the most powerful reminders of this legacy is a framed photo in his office showing his father, Thomas Hoff, a Chicago Fire Department battalion chief who died in the line of duty on February 14, 1962, when Bob was just five years old. A message beneath the photo reads, "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die." His mother, Eleanor, passed away eight years later. The other candidate for the chief position was Perry Johnson, a 38-year veteran of the district. When Hoff was promoted, Johnson moved into a newly created civilian role as chief administrative officer. Since then, the two have worked closely together managing the district’s daily operations, especially since former Chief Kolomay underwent shoulder surgery, took paid leave, and officially retired on June 1. Both Hoff and Johnson have also been part of the district’s negotiating team in ongoing discussions with the firefighters’ union. A federal mediator is scheduled to meet with both sides later this month. One of the key issues under negotiation is the potential for pay raises, with officials looking to bring firefighter salaries in line with those of neighboring departments.
