Remembrance Rescue Project – FDNY R5
Scott Nacheman discovered the X-FDNY Rescue 5, which was stationed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, being restored in Northbrook as part of the Rescue Remembrance Project. Earlier, we shared stories about the previously acquired unit, X-FDNY R-4, which you can read here, here, and here.
According to the Rescue Remembrance Project:
This restoration effort is not just about reviving a vehicle—it's about keeping the memory of 9/11 alive and paying tribute to the first responders who risked everything. Rescue 5 stands as a symbol of resilience, courage, and remembrance, and its journey through restoration is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
In December 2011, the project acquired the final rescue truck from 9/11—Rescue 5. It was transported to the project’s facility in Chicago and is currently undergoing restoration. The truck will be unveiled at FDIC in Indianapolis this month.
Recently, the truck was repainted by Capital Truck Body in Cicero and is now at MPC Lighting in Northbrook for the installation of new lighting. Jacquette Custom Lettering is handling all the striping and hand-painting the original artwork that once adorned the truck.
The goal is to restore Rescue 5 as closely as possible to its original condition, preserving its historical significance and honoring the brave men and women who served on 9/11.
