Cicero 4-Alarm fire with 2 specials – 1-21-14

I just got back from covering the massive fire that broke out last night in Cicero. It's definitely one of those incidents that will stick in my mind for a long time. The fire started at around 1829 on 54th Avenue and quickly spread to 1843 54th Avenue. Within an hour, it went from a small structure fire to a full-blown four-alarm emergency. That’s when Chicago was called in for additional support, along with a task force from MABAS Division 20. Eric Haak was on scene early and managed to capture some incredible photos. Here’s what he had to say about them: “The first photo is exactly how I found it when I arrived. Shots 4 and 5 show the intense fire blowing out the side of the building about ten minutes later. Pictures 6, 7, and 8 highlight Oak Park’s tower working hard on the sector 2/3 corner. Picture 3 shows Cicero Engine 1 using their deck gun for just a short while.” As you can see from these images, the fire was absolutely massive. The heat was so intense that it lit up the entire area like daylight. You could feel the warmth even from a block away. I’m still waiting for more shots from Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro, but these initial pictures give you a pretty good idea of the scale of this disaster. There were moments when the flames seemed to dance higher than any of the surrounding buildings. The smoke was thick enough to make breathing difficult, and the acrid smell lingered in the air long after the fire trucks had left. This is just the beginning of my coverage. I’ll continue to update this story as new information becomes available and as more photographers contribute their work. For now, though, it’s clear that this fire will leave a lasting impact on the community. Let’s hope everyone involved stays safe moving forward.
