Wheeling house fire 7-23-14

This just came in from Larry Shapiro: Residents of 293 Lincoln Road called the Wheeling Fire Department on Wednesday evening to report what sounded like an explosion in the kitchen. The first responding officer arrived to find smoke billowing from the house and learned that one person required immediate medical attention. Firefighters arrived shortly after and confirmed that the structure, a split-level home, was fully engulfed. An ambulance quickly transported the injured civilian to a nearby hospital, and the fire department escalated the response to a full-scale working fire. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control using two interior lines within a matter of minutes. In addition to the initial response team, units from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Northbrook also joined the effort. The Wheeling Fire Department dispatched two engines, two ambulances, a ladder truck, and two chief officers to the scene. It was quite the coordinated effort. Here are a few photos and a short video I took while the firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. [Insert Images] Light smoke was visible when I arrived, but as the firefighters worked, they made significant progress. You can see how the roof was eventually ventilated to help control the fire. Here's a shot of the Wheeling and Northbrook engines on site. [Insert Image Caption: Engines from Wheeling and Northbrook. [Insert Image Caption: Wheeling Truck 24 had two lines off. Larry Shapiro photo] Interestingly, it looks like new fire hydrants are being installed down the block. This could be a sign of upgrades in the area. [Insert Image Caption: New fire hydrant next to old one. This incident really highlighted the importance of having such well-trained and equipped firefighters in our community. It’s always a reminder of how quickly situations can escalate and why preparedness is key.
