Chicago Still & Box Alarm 11-24-13

Sunday, November 24th—Around 2:12 PM, emergency services in Chicago's South Side responded to reports of a fire on the 8000 block of South May Street. Just three minutes after the initial dispatch, Engine 129 arrived on the scene and quickly identified a fire in the basement of a 30x125-foot, 3.5-story ordinary structure housing apartments. At 2:20 PM, Battalion 18 communicated over the radio that the blaze had intensified, with heavy flames consuming both the basement and the first floor. He immediately called for a Still & Box response, which coincided with the moment the first photo in this gallery was captured. The fire spread upward to the second floor shortly after. Engine 54 was stationed on Aberdeen Street, just one block to the east, where it connected a hose line through the gangway to Sector 3. By 3:14 PM, the firebox was officially struck, signaling the end of the emergency response phase. The Red Cross was already on site, assisting 11 residents who had been displaced by the fire. Attached are several images taken by Eric Haak, capturing the intense efforts of the Chicago Fire Department as they worked to control the blaze. The smoke-filled scenes reveal the challenging conditions faced by firefighters as they navigated the multi-story building to extinguish the flames and ensure the safety of everyone involved. --- **Gallery Photos Below:** ![](image_url_1) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![](image_url_2) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![](image_url_3) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![](image_url_4) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* ![](image_url_5) *Photo Credit: Eric Haak* The dedication and skill of these firefighters were evident throughout the operation, as they tackled not only the fire but also the structural challenges posed by the building's age and layout. The community remains grateful for their swift action and professionalism during this incident.
