Pembroke FPD brush truck destroyed in fire

Excerpts from the DailyJournal.com:

Brush fires have long tested the resilience of Pembroke Township’s small volunteer fire department, but a recent illegal burn has left them in a dire situation. A brush truck, one of their most essential tools, was destroyed after becoming stuck during an attempt to contain a fire on South Dickerson Street and East Russell Drive. Fortunately, no one was injured, but the $20,000 vehicle is now totaled.

Fire Chief Mark Baines expressed his frustration: “We’re already short on manpower, and now we’ve lost a truck. It’s devastating. We have to rely on neighboring departments like Momence or St. Anne for help, and every second counts when fighting a fire.”

The department, which consists of just 12 members, deals with about 100 brush fires annually. So far this year, they've responded to at least 15 incidents, including one that damaged a homeowner's pool fence. Last year, a similar fire completely destroyed a mobile home.

Baines pointed to careless behavior as the root cause. “It’s reckless burning,” he said. “People are illegally burning trash without thinking. Many of these fires are started by repeat offenders. I don’t get how someone can't afford $15 a month for garbage pickup.”

Kankakee County law strictly prohibits open burning of hazardous materials, as defined by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. Burning is also banned on windy days due to the risk of spreading rapidly.

With no brush truck to rely on, Baines issued a clear warning to residents: “Don’t burn. Just don’t burn.”

This message comes from Brad Steinweg:

Hello,

While scrolling through Facebook last week, I saw some photos shared by the Pembroke Fire Protection District. It looked like their brush truck got caught up in a fire while they were trying to control it. I don’t have all the details, but from what I’ve read so far, it seems the truck got stuck in the mud and the flames eventually reached it.
