CFD Personnel Reorganization – update 2

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), which oversees the 9-1-1 dispatch center, is set to implement a series of personnel changes that will take effect on January 1, 2012. These adjustments impact both fire and police communications staff. Among the key changes for the fire department are: - Four senior alarm board operators will be reclassified as dispatchers. - Two dispatchers will transition into call taker roles. - At least five call takers may lose their positions. Currently, each shift has a senior alarm board operator assigned to both the Englewood and Main operations. Starting January 1, one individual will be responsible for handling calls from both areas, which could lead to increased workload and potential service delays. According to a post on the OEMC Facebook page, pink slips and demotion notices were handed out to 911 operators on Friday, December 16, 2011. This move has raised concerns among staff and local officials alike. CBS Chicago reported on statements from OEMC supervisor Shanita Carter, who warned about the consequences of further cuts to the 911 center. She expressed concern over the already understaffed and overworked call takers, particularly in high-crime neighborhoods where response times are already slow. “Without enough staff, the city of Chicago is in big trouble,” Carter said. “In the communities I live in, there's already a delay in emergency response, and this will only make things worse. They’re not just cutting call takers—they’re targeting supervisors too. These supervisors play a vital role in training, motivating, and supporting the team. They're already stretched thin and burned out.” Carter emphasized that the current staffing levels are unsustainable, and further reductions would only worsen the situation. Earlier this week, 28 aldermen signed a letter expressing concerns over city budget cuts, specifically highlighting the impact on critical services like the OEMC and public libraries. The proposed cuts could result in the loss of many jobs, raising fears about the long-term effects on public safety and community services.
