Flyability launches a radiation survey meter payload for indoor inspection drone Elios 3 in partnership with Mirion Technologies

May 17, 2023—Flyability, a leading provider of indoor drone solutions, has partnered with Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR), a global leader in radiation detection and monitoring, to launch a new radiation surveying payload for the Elios 3 indoor inspection drone.

This groundbreaking integration combines Mirion’s RDS-32™ radiation survey meter with Flyability’s Elios 3 drone, making it the first commercially available indoor drone capable of performing remote radiation surveys and precise localization. The system allows users to map environments while collecting radiological data, which can then be visualized in a high-resolution 3D model of the asset.

The new solution enables nuclear personnel to gather critical radiation data from a safe distance, eliminating the need to enter hazardous areas. This not only improves safety but also enhances operational efficiency in nuclear facilities.

“This partnership between two industry leaders is a major milestone for us,” said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. “The extensive field testing we conducted in nuclear sites has confirmed that this product will significantly enhance our mission to improve safety through robotics.”

The RDS-32 integration includes a new widget within Flyability’s Cockpit app, providing real-time readings of dose rates, cumulative exposure, and measurement history. The live map now color-codes the drone’s flight path based on radiation levels, helping operators quickly identify hotspots.

All flights with the radiation payload can be analyzed using Flyability’s Inspector software, which generates detailed reports. The data is displayed on a 3D map showing the drone’s trajectory, radiation levels along the route, and specific dose rate measurements at key points of interest.

“By combining the accuracy of the RDS-32 with the accessibility of the Elios 3, we’ve taken nuclear safety to a new level,” said Loic Eloy, President of Mirion Technologies. “We’re proud to collaborate with Flyability and continue our commitment to advancing radiation safety through innovation.”

The integration was tested extensively at multiple nuclear sites across the U.S. and Europe. Radiological specialists and UAS program managers used the system for tasks such as monitoring hydraulic leaks, assessing dose rates in maintenance zones, and evaluating the impact of equipment replacement on radiation levels.

The Elios 3 has also been tested for radiation resistance in a project led by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Idaho Environmental Coalition. Results showed that the drone can withstand up to 10,000 R/h and a total accumulated dose of 4,000 R, proving its durability in high-radiation environments.
