Southwestern Illinois College Fire Science Program receives vintage fire engine
I just came across some interesting news from riverbend.com that I wanted to share. It’s about a retired firefighter who’s generously donated an old fire truck to Southwestern Illinois College’s Fire Science Program. This isn’t just any ordinary vehicle—it’s a 1963 Chevrolet Howe fire engine that was previously part of the Willisville Fire Department.
Daniel Lougeay, a former Fairview Heights firefighter from Marissa, purchased this classic piece of equipment back in 2002. Over the years, he used it mainly for parades and antique fire truck exhibitions. Now, he’s decided to pass it on to the college so that current and future students can get hands-on experience operating a fire hose pump and learning various firefighting techniques.
“I’m really happy to support the next generation of firefighters,†Lougeay explained. “Helping them develop their skills is crucial—not just for their personal growth but also for ensuring everyone’s safety. Plus, it’s rewarding to know I’m contributing to such a strong fire science program in our region.â€
The donated fire engine will now be housed at the SWIC Clay Baitman Fire Science Center in Belleville, which serves as the hub for all fire science classes. Did you know that this program churns out over 30 new firefighters every year? That’s quite impressive! SWIC offers not only a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree in Fire Science but also multiple certificate programs to cater to different career paths within the field.
If you’d like to learn more about the Fire Science Program, you can reach out directly to Program Coordinator Curt Lougeay (no relation to Daniel) at 618-234-5138. Or if you’re interested in making your own contribution to SWIC, head over to their website at swic.edu/community/foundation/ways-to-give/ for details on how to donate.
It’s always inspiring to see people giving back to their communities in meaningful ways. This donation could make a huge difference for aspiring firefighters looking to hone their craft. Let’s hope it encourages others to follow suit!
