New (used) heavy rescue with crane for Newport FPD
Bill Friedrich recently informed us that the Newport FPD in Lake County acquired a 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue truck through a deal with the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company in Baltimore County, Maryland. This particular rig features a mid-ship mounted 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane. While the truck hasn't yet made its way to Illinois, we're told it's on its way. The Lutherville apparatus are known for their distinctive paint scheme—white with gold stripes and a black band along the bottom. In 2008, they swapped out this squad, replacing it with a newer Pierce Velocity heavy rescue that sports a tandem axle configuration and a 10-ton National Crane.
This older Mack model served Lutherville well as Squad 303 until its retirement. As seen in the photos, the truck had quite the presence when fully equipped with its crane. These cranes were essential for tasks like stabilizing or lifting vehicles during extrication efforts. Larry Shapiro captured some excellent shots of Squad 303 both at rest and in action, highlighting the capabilities of such equipment.
In contrast, the Pierce Velocity introduced in 2008 brought updated technology and improved performance to Lutherville's fleet. This modernized rescue vehicle continues to serve the community today, equipped with its own 10-ton crane. The transition marked a significant upgrade, reflecting the evolving needs of emergency responders over two decades.
Reflecting on these changes, it's fascinating to see how fire departments adapt their fleets to meet operational demands while preserving tradition. Whether it's the classic charm of the Mack or the cutting-edge design of the Pierce Velocity, each vehicle plays a vital role in keeping communities safe. I'm curious to see what the future holds for emergency response vehicles as technology continues to advance.
The photos provided offer a glimpse into the history and evolution of firefighting equipment. From the vintage Mack to the modern Pierce, each image tells a story of dedication and progress within the volunteer fire service. It’s inspiring to think about how these tools help protect lives and property every day.
