As I drove through the picturesque town of Woodstock in McHenry County, I couldn’t help but notice its well-maintained fire district, which plays a crucial role in covering an expansive area of over 86 square miles. The Woodstock Fire District operates three stations, each contributing to the safety and security of the community with a mix of paid and part-time firefighters. Station 1 is home to an impressive 105-foot Pierce Arrow XT quint, a versatile vehicle that can handle everything from fires to medical emergencies. Meanwhile, Stations 2 and 3 each house a robust fleet including a Pierce engine, a tanker, and a brush rig, ensuring readiness for any situation that arises.
What caught my attention was Station 1’s uniquely designed decal, which features a creative emblem representing the companies stationed there. It was a great example of how each station adds its own character to the district. Further down the road, I found Station 3 also had its own distinct decal, adding another layer of identity to the already impressive setup. Interestingly, while Stations 2 and 3 share a similar architectural design, there’s a key difference: Station 2 has three bays, whereas Station 3 has just two. Both stations feature drive-thru bays, making it easier for vehicles to enter and exit quickly during emergencies.
Station 2, located on Dean Street, looks strikingly similar to Station 1, except for the bay count. A local photographer, Larry Shapiro, captured this resemblance beautifully in one of his photos. On the other hand, Station 3 stands out due to its slightly smaller footprint but no less significant impact on the community.
While walking around, I learned that the district also houses Hazmat 5 at Station 1. This specialized unit serves both Divisions 4 and 5, providing essential hazardous materials response services. Speaking of innovation, the newest additions to the fleet include a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT engine and a matching 105-foot RM aerial ladder, which are state-of-the-art pieces of equipment designed to enhance firefighting capabilities.
One detail that intrigued me was the mention of two antique units at Station 2. Although they haven’t been photographed yet, these classic vehicles likely hold a wealth of history and tradition for the district. It’s always fascinating to see how older models coexist with modern technology within the same organization.
Overall, the Woodstock Fire District does an excellent job balancing tradition and modernity. Their dedication to serving the community is evident in every aspect of their operations, from the thoughtful design of their stations to the cutting-edge equipment they deploy.
