Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at an industrial building in the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue early on December 14, 2015. A critical incident occurred when a firefighter fell through an open floor hole during the operation. A Mayday alert was issued with a Still & Box Alarm and EMS Plan I. The firefighter was quickly rescued and taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition. According to ABC7 Chicago, the fire broke out in a three-story building under construction around 2:40 a.m. The structure had multiple floor openings, and while firefighters were fighting the blaze, one of them fell into an open elevator shaft. A Mayday call was made, and paramedics arrived on scene to perform CPR before transporting the injured firefighter to Advocate Christ Medical Center. He later succumbed to his injuries. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago confirmed that the firefighter, from Tower Ladder 34, was conducting a search on the second floor when he fell into the shaft leading to the basement. Emergency crews reached him quickly and transported him via ambulance to Christ Hospital, where he died. From the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the victim was 42-year-old Dan Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. He was the father of three children. Capuano was injured about 20 minutes after firefighters arrived at the vacant warehouse on 92nd and Baltimore. The fire started on the second floor and was brought under control by around 3:45 a.m. The Chicago Building Department was sent to the scene to assess the structural integrity of the building. This tragic event has sparked concern over safety conditions in construction sites and the risks faced by first responders during emergency operations. The community is mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant who gave his life in the line of duty.
