Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at an industrial building in the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue early on December 14, 2015. A critical incident occurred when a firefighter fell through an open floor hole during the operation. A Mayday alert was immediately issued, along with a Still & Box Alarm and EMS Plan I. The injured firefighter was quickly rescued and taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
According to ABC7Chicago.com, the fire broke out in a three-story building under construction around 2:40 a.m. The structure had multiple floor openings, and while crews were fighting the blaze, one firefighter fell into an open elevator shaft on the second floor. A Mayday call was made, and paramedics arrived on scene to perform CPR before transporting the firefighter to Advocate Christ Medical Center. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago confirmed that the firefighter, from Tower Ladder 34, was conducting a search on the second floor when he fell into the shaft. Emergency teams quickly accessed the basement and transported him via ambulance to Christ Hospital, where he passed away.
From the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the victim was 42-year-old Dan Capuano, a 15-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. He was the father of three children. Capuano was injured approximately 20 minutes after firefighters arrived at the vacant warehouse at 92nd and Baltimore. The fire was brought under control by around 3:45 a.m.
The Chicago Building Department was sent to the scene to assess the structural safety of the building. This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by first responders in hazardous environments and serves as a reminder of the risks they take daily to protect the community.
