Vintage CFD fire photos

Bill Friedrich has been sharing a collection of vintage photos from the Chicago Fire Department, offering a glimpse into the city's firefighting history. Many of these images capture the harsh winter conditions on fire scenes in Chicago, showcasing the challenges firefighters faced during cold-weather emergencies. While the photographers remain unidentified, as do the exact dates and locations of the fires, the photos provide a fascinating look at the past. One image, titled "1963__MERCY_HOSPITAL_FIRE-BF," shows two Hi-Ranger Snorkels and the original Pitman-Snorkel working alongside several ladders during an extra-alarm fire at Mercy Hospital in 1963. The scene reflects the intensity and coordination required during large-scale emergencies. Another photo, labeled "FIRE_SCENE_2-BF," features two Autocar pumpers and a water tower, all encased in ice. Though the photographer, date, and location are unknown, the image highlights the extreme weather conditions that often accompanied these incidents. A third photo, "FIRE_SCENE_3-BF," offers another view of the downtown fire, capturing the efforts of firefighters in action. The image gives a sense of the scale and urgency of the situation. The final photo, "FIRE_SCENE_1-BF," presents a different angle, showing two water towers at work. Despite the lack of details about the photographer or the event, this image adds to the historical record of Chicago’s firefighting efforts. These photos not only serve as a visual archive but also remind us of the dedication and bravery of those who served in the past. They offer a rare and valuable perspective on the evolution of firefighting in one of America's largest cities.
