Highland Park 2-11 5-9-11
The Highland Park Fire Department was called to a fire in the attic of a large, three-story brick home on Sheridan Road shortly after 7 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming through the roof of the residence located in the 1400 block of the street. The incident was quickly escalated to a working fire, with units en route and mutual aid arriving from Glencoe, Deerfield, and Highwood. First-arriving companies launched an aggressive attack but faced challenges accessing the attic due to complex roof structures.
As the situation worsened, the alarm was raised to a second alarm, bringing additional resources from Northbrook, Winnetka, Lake Bluff, and Knollwood. Northfield and Wheeling also sent extra trucks, while Wilmette dispatched a squad. Ambulances from Highland Park, Highwood, Prospect Heights, and Libertyville were on scene to assist with any injuries.
Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which remained largely confined to the upper floors. Smoke, however, spread throughout the entire house. Despite the difficulty in reaching the fire from inside, Highwood’s master stream was deployed to tackle the flames at the roof peak where access was impossible.
Photographers Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro captured the scene, showing heavy smoke billowing from the attic and flames visible above the third floor. Highwood was the first truck on the scene, positioning Truck 37, a 75-foot HME/Smeal quint, opposite Highland Park Engine 32, a 2010 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson unit that arrived first and tapped a hydrant across the street.
Images also showed the fire burning through the eaves, with firefighters standing in areas where the roof had collapsed. The effort by all responding departments helped prevent the fire from spreading further, though the structure suffered significant damage.
