Arlington Heights PD & FD receive generous gifts

The Chicago Tribune recently ran a story about a generous donation benefiting both the Arlington Heights Police Department and Fire Department. It turns out that an Arlington Heights resident, whose tragic death led to some scrutiny over how his emergency call was handled, left behind a substantial legacy for local first responders. Henry E. Laseke, who passed away at the age of 89 after accidentally driving his Cadillac into a pond near his home, had planned to make a difference even after his untimely passing. His estate generously allocated $200,000 to each of the Arlington Heights fire and police departments. These funds have already made a significant impact, purchasing a brand-new ambulance for the fire department and ensuring full funding for the police K-9 unit over the next decade. Judy Filek, a close family friend and executor of Laseke's estate, described him as a quiet yet deeply loyal individual. She recalled that Laseke wasn’t someone who sought attention, but his actions spoke volumes about his character. Arlington Heights Police Chief Gerald Mourning confirmed that he had discussed Laseke’s plans for his estate with him a few years prior. During their conversation, the chief recommended setting aside funds specifically for the K-9 unit, as Laseke expressed a desire to contribute to the community in a way that surpassed the typical police department budget. Tragically, Laseke’s life ended abruptly on the morning of July 25 when he lost control of his SUV, striking an electrical box and a balcony support post before plunging into the pond. Neighbors who witnessed the incident immediately attempted a rescue, but unfortunately, it was too late. The dispatcher who took Laseke’s initial 911 call faced disciplinary action for what was deemed inappropriate handling of the situation. However, internal documents from the Northwest Central Dispatch System indicate that this delay didn’t significantly impact the overall response time, as additional calls reporting the emergency came in shortly thereafter. It’s heartwarming to see how someone’s generosity can leave such a lasting positive mark on their community, even in death. Thanks for sharing this story—it really highlights the importance of looking beyond ourselves and giving back whenever possible. *Thanks Dan!*
