2-Alarm fire in Arlington Heights, 12-3-15

A huge fire broke out in a long-vacant building in Arlington Heights on Thursday morning, causing significant damage and reducing the structure to ruins. The incident quickly escalated into an extra-alarm emergency, prompting a swift response from the local fire department. Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman reported that the call came in at around 6 a.m., alerting authorities to a massive blaze at a sprawling, single-story brick building located on Arthur Avenue, just south of the Metra Union Pacific rail tracks. When firefighters arrived, they found the building fully engulfed in flames, with reports indicating that within minutes, the roof collapsed entirely. Chief Ahlman described the scene as chaotic, with towering flames reaching up to 40 feet high. Firefighters from Arlington Heights and surrounding suburbs worked tirelessly to contain the inferno, eventually gaining control by noon. The building, previously home to Tower Plastics until their relocation to Burr Ridge in 2011, had been listed for sale. It was described as a challenging site due to its size and the intensity of the fire. Crews utilized heavy machinery, including a backhoe, to carefully dismantle parts of the structure that had partially collapsed, aiding them in accessing critical areas inside to extinguish remaining hotspots. Approximately 100 firefighters participated in battling the intense flames, which according to Ahlman, ranked among the largest commercial building fires in recent years for the village. The efforts were both physically demanding and logistically complex, requiring coordination across multiple departments to ensure safety and efficiency. In addition to the firefighting efforts, video footage provided by Scott Peterson offers a glimpse into the dramatic events unfolding. Two separate videos capture different angles of the fire, showcasing the sheer scale and devastation caused by the blaze. These clips highlight the bravery of first responders who worked around the clock to protect nearby properties and prevent further spread of the fire. As of now, investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Local residents expressed relief that no injuries were reported but voiced concerns about potential impacts on the community. Updates will continue to be shared as more details emerge regarding the aftermath and recovery process. Thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and dedication during this crisis. Special thanks go out to Tom for his contributions. More detailed coverage will follow tomorrow, including interviews with key personnel and additional perspectives from eyewitnesses. Stay tuned!
