Forecast Anticipates BEV Adoption Rates to Drive Industry Decarbonization Goals
ACT Research recently released its latest decarbonization forecast, titled *North America Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK Plus*, which integrates anticipated advancements in zero-emission technologies for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), and natural gas (NG) as an alternative decarbonization method.
According to Ann Rundle, ACT's Vice President of Electrification & Autonomy, "We anticipate BEVs to play a crucial role in achieving decarbonization targets across different applications and GVW segments within the commercial vehicle landscape." She further noted, "We foresee the deployment of FCEVs and continued use of NG trucks, but these will be targeted at specific niches with slower adoption rates compared to BEVs."
ACT Research predicts a substantial rise in total Class 8 tractor unit sales in 2026, driven by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2027 low-NOx regulations. Regarding the BEV outlook, Rundle stated, "Adoption rates will remain relatively low in 2025 and 2026 due to the infancy of the commercial vehicle BEV market. Challenges on the supply side, such as infrastructure hurdles, will keep adoption rates in check, though this dynamic shifts post-2027."
Lydia Vieth, ACT's Research Analyst for Electrification & Autonomy, added, "Currently, medium-duty applications are ideal for BEV adoption, thanks in part to California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Clean Trucks regulation, which is accelerating BEV uptake in Class 8, particularly for tractors, until the end of the decade. Beyond 2030, favorable Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for heavy-duty BEVs will become the key driver for broader adoption in higher GVW categories."
Vieth also mentioned, "FCEV truck volumes will stay low from 2025 to 2029, largely due to higher TCO compared to diesel, NG, and BEV alternatives. In addition to cost factors, limited hydrogen fueling infrastructure will restrict FCEV adoption to fleets operating in areas with accessible H2 stations."
Rundle concluded, "Our short-term NG forecast anticipates relatively stable unit sales regardless of overall Class 8 truck volume fluctuations."
ACT Research’s forecasting solutions, including the standard *NA CV OUTLOOK* and the enhanced *OUTLOOK Plus*, offer a comprehensive view of the North American commercial vehicle and transportation market. These reports project Classes 4-8 vehicles and commercial trailers, helping industry stakeholders plan, budget, develop their go-to-market strategies, and leverage third-party insights for strategic decision-making. By delving into critical demand drivers such as regulations and consumer demand, these reports present detailed unit forecasts for trailers and medium and heavy-duty segments, including powertrain splits (diesel, battery electric, fuel cell electric, and natural gas).
The NA CV forecast provides a detailed outlook on the trucking industry, offering insights into commercial vehicle demand, tactical and strategic market analysis, and five-year projections. Its purpose is to equip Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, investors, and other market participants with the necessary information to make informed decisions in a traditionally cyclical market. The report offers a thorough examination of North American markets, covering forward-looking activity metrics, orders, and backlogs. It also includes build and retail sales forecasts, current market conditions for medium and heavy-duty trucks/tractors and trailers, North American macroeconomics by country, freight and carrier market performance, used equipment valuation trends, and regulatory environment analysis.
