Rolling Meadows firefighters assist young burn victim
A touching story emerged recently in The Daily Herald, highlighting how Rolling Meadows firefighters went above and beyond to bring comfort to a young burn victim named Adorian Fentry. It all began when Rick Acosta, a firefighter with Rolling Meadows Firefighters Local 3075, visited La Rabida Children's Hospital last month. As he entered the room, he noticed something heartening—an iPad charging next to Adorian's bed. This simple sight confirmed that the device, which Acosta and his fellow firefighters had gifted Adorian following a tragic accident, was being put to good use.
The incident occurred in March when Adorian, just 8 years old at the time, accidentally set himself on fire after tipping over a candle while sitting on a coffee table. The resulting injuries were severe, leaving him with second- and third-degree burns across 35% of his body. He underwent extensive treatment and rehabilitation at La Rabida, a hospital located on Chicago’s South Side. Unfortunately, due to the intensity of his therapy, Adorian couldn’t see his family or classmates during the week, only on weekends.
Realizing this situation could be emotionally challenging for Adorian, Acosta and several other firefighters decided to take action. They pooled resources to buy two iPads, hoping these devices would enable Adorian to stay connected through video calls via FaceTime and Skype. Not only did they hope to brighten Adorian's spirits, but they also wanted to support his emotional well-being during such a difficult time.
Acosta explained, "Most traumatic emergency medical calls usually involve some form of follow-up. But when it comes to kids in emergency situations, it hits you differently." He continued, "Our union Local 3075 members were eager to help this family. Without hesitation, they donated generously from their own pockets." Additionally, Acosta mentioned that their fire chief contributed funds to ensure the purchase of the iPads. Their primary objective? To make Adorian smile—and judging by the outcome, they succeeded beautifully.
In May, eight firefighters from Rolling Meadows made a special trip to La Rabida to present Adorian with the much-awaited gifts. Among them were four paramedics who had been part of the initial response team back in March. Upon walking into the room, Adorian's face instantly lit up. Seeing the joy on his face was incredibly rewarding for everyone involved. What happened next truly touched the hearts of the firefighters: Adorian got out of his wheelchair—not to mention his remarkable bravery throughout the ordeal—and personally thanked each member of the group.
Colin Barr, another firefighter present at the reunion, recalled, "He shook each of our hands and expressed gratitude—it was incredible." Barr further noted how impressed they were by Adorian's composure during the original incident and his unwavering determination since then. His polite demeanor left a lasting impression on everyone who met him.
This inspiring tale serves as a reminder of the compassion and dedication shown not just by first responders but by communities as a whole.
