Rolling Meadows firefighters assist young burn victim
The Daily Herald recently published an inspiring story about how firefighters from Rolling Meadows went above and beyond their duties to bring comfort to a young burn victim. It's heartwarming to see such acts of kindness in action.
Last month, Rolling Meadows firefighter Rick Acosta paid a visit to La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago. What caught his attention was an iPad sitting nearby a young patient’s bed. This sight reassured him that Adorian Fentry, an 8-year-old from Rolling Meadows, was utilizing the device gifted to him by Rick and fellow members of the Rolling Meadows Firefighters Local 3075 following an incident back in March.
During that fateful day, the firefighters responded to a 911 call where Adorian accidentally knocked over a candle while sitting on a cocktail table, causing his clothes to catch fire. The outcome was severe burns covering 35% of his body, necessitating extensive treatment and rehabilitation at La Rabida, located on Chicago’s South Side.
Understanding that Adorian's intense therapy regimen would keep him away from his family and classmates except during weekends, the firefighters decided to take matters into their own hands. They collectively raised funds to buy two iPads, hoping these gadgets equipped with dual-facing cameras would enable Adorian to stay connected with his loved ones through video calls via FaceTime and Skype.
Firefighter Rick Acosta explained, "Emergency calls involving children always hit differently; it elevates everything emotionally. Our union Local 3075 members were quick to contribute from their wallets to support this family." He further noted, "We also received additional funding from our fire chief, making this possible. Our primary aim was simply to brighten Adorian's days, and we succeeded."
In early May, a team of eight Rolling Meadows firefighters visited La Rabida to present Adorian with these thoughtful gifts. Among them were four of the original responders from Adorian’s home emergency earlier this year. As recounted by firefighter Colin Barr, Adorian's eyes sparkled upon spotting the firefighters entering his room, especially glowing brighter when they handed over the iPads.
Seeing Adorian's joy was rewarding enough for the firefighters. However, what truly left an impression was Adorian getting out of his wheelchair to personally thank each one of them—a testament to his courage and politeness. Barr recalled, "That evening, we were deeply moved by his composure amidst adversity. Post-meeting, we were once again reminded of his resilience and gratitude."
This touching narrative highlights not just physical recovery but also emotional healing through community support. For those interested in reading more details, the full article can be accessed [here].
