The Glenside Fire Protection District, which serves the majority of Glendale Heights and Glen Ellyn Countryside in DuPage County, Illinois, is currently looking for a Deputy Fire Chief. Located 25 miles west of Chicago, the district is primarily residential with some commercial areas. It covers a four-square-mile area and serves approximately 34,000 residents from a single fire station. In 2015, the department responded to 2,349 calls, including fires, emergency medical services (EMS), and specialized rescues. The department is staffed by 18 full-time firefighters, 20 on-call personnel, two chief officers, and four administrative support staff.
The ideal candidate should be a dynamic, experienced leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills. A commitment to maintaining high professional standards is essential, along with experience in both fire suppression and EMS operations. The Deputy Fire Chief must have an inclusive management style and previous experience working within a union environment. This appointed position, selected by the Board of Trustees, involves administrative and supervisory responsibilities, including planning, organizing, and directing departmental programs under the Fire Chief’s direction. The Deputy Chief oversees daily operations, assists in managing fire suppression, rescue, and EMS activities, and handles budgeting, fire prevention, training, and records management.
This is an FLSA-exempt position, meaning it is salaried rather than hourly.
**Minimum Qualifications**
Candidates should have extensive experience in fire ground command, demonstrating strong supervisory and leadership abilities. They must possess comprehensive knowledge of modern fire department operations and administration, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong judgment, management expertise, and a solid understanding of labor/management relations and collective bargaining are also required.
**Education Requirements**
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science is required; a Master’s in a related field is preferred.
- Certification as a Fire Officer III by the Illinois State Fire Marshal, along with Hazardous Materials Incident Command certification, is mandatory.
- A valid Illinois driver's license is required.
- Candidates must reside within 10 miles of the fire station within one year of appointment.
- Five years of experience in fire district policies, rules, and regulations is preferred.
**Compensation and Benefits**
The salary range is $91,045 to $101,766, depending on qualifications and experience. The district offers a competitive benefits package and a strong retirement program.
