**Marion Body Works CEO Killed in Crash**
*October 4, 2012*
A tragic accident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the intersection of County Roads E and BB, just south of Gillett in Shawano County. One person was killed, and several others were injured in the two-vehicle rollover crash.
The victim has been identified as James Simpson, president and CEO of Marion Body Works, a company based in Marion that specializes in manufacturing fire and rescue apparatus. Simpson was a passenger in a Honda minivan that was struck by a Chevrolet SUV.
According to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened around 1:35 p.m. The SUV, driven by 83-year-old Alvin Birr of Suring, was traveling southbound on County Road BB when it collided with the minivan heading east on County Road E. Simpson, who was riding with William Schaefer of Madison, was ejected from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at the scene.
Birr, Schaefer, and another passenger in the minivan were taken to local hospitals, with one being airlifted via Eagle III helicopter. The exact nature of their injuries is still being determined.
County Road E and BB are currently part of a detour for Highway 22, which is closed between Gillett and Oconto Falls due to ongoing construction. This has led to increased traffic through the area, raising concerns among locals.
“I’ve seen a lot of close calls here lately,†said Janell Townsend, a resident near the intersection. “There’s definitely more traffic now because of the detour.â€
This heartbreaking event marks a devastating loss for the Marion Body Works community and the broader fire equipment industry. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim’s family and all those affected by this tragedy.
